Tesla’s FSD v14.2 Update Shows Promise, But Has Its Flaws

Tesla’s latest Full Self-Driving (FSD) software update, version 14.2, has been rolling out to a select group of early access customers over the past week. The update introduces new features and improvements aimed at enhancing the car’s autonomy in various driving scenarios. Among these is the enhanced parking lot handling functionality, which allows vehicles to navigate parking lots more effectively. However, our previous analysis revealed that some users are experiencing mixed results with this feature.

In recent tests conducted by Tesla owners, the FSD v14.2 system performed well in most parking lot situations, offering smooth and efficient automatic parking. The update also includes enhanced traffic management capabilities, making it easier for vehicles to handle complex driving conditions without requiring manual intervention from the driver. However, as we reported earlier this year, some early adopters have noted that FSD v14.2 sometimes fails to use the front bumper camera during autonomous parking maneuvers, leading to minor mishaps like bumping into curbs or other obstacles.

One notable issue highlighted by Tesla enthusiasts is the regression observed in certain outdoor parking scenarios compared to previous versions of the software. For instance, a user reported that FSD v14.2 attempted to exit a tight indoor parking spot with excessive confidence, nearly causing damage to the vehicle’s front end. This suggests that while overall performance has improved, there are still areas where further refinement is needed.

Despite these challenges, Tesla continues to expand its rollout of FSD v14.2 across its fleet in the United States and Canada. As of now, approximately 4% of eligible Teslas have received the update, with Cybertruck owners also included in this batch. The company aims to gradually increase availability ahead of the holiday season when demand for autonomous driving features typically surges.

Tesla’s commitment to continuous improvement through iterative software updates is evident in its handling of feedback from early adopters. By listening to user experiences and implementing changes accordingly, Tesla hopes to deliver a more reliable and efficient FSD system that meets consumer expectations. As the rollout continues, it will be interesting to see how these initial teething issues are addressed by Tesla’s engineering team.
