Hyundai Unveils Crater Concept for Off-Road Adventure

At AutoMobility LA 2025, Hyundai unveiled the Crater Concept, an off-road adventure SUV that embodies rugged design and extreme capability. The compact vehicle was conceived at Hyundai America Technical Center in Irvine, California, inspired by the diverse terrain of the region. SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design, described it as a response to the question: ‘What does freedom look like?’ This concept car is designed to inspire customers to explore deeper into adventurous territories.

Crater Concept’s design elements reflect its XRT spirit, offering robust protection and connectivity features. The vehicle boasts 18-inch hexagonal wheels with generous 33-inch off-road tires for superior traction and ground clearance. A wide skid plate protects the underbody from damage while providing additional stability in rugged conditions. Other notable exterior features include a functional roof platform that allows for easy mounting of auxiliary lighting and storage.

Inside, the Crater Concept caters to tech-savvy adventure enthusiasts with a BYOD approach. The cabin includes a roll cage, integrated grab handles for ease of entry and exit, and an interior designed for durability. The vehicle’s Dune Gold Matte exterior color is inspired by California’s coastal terrain, while pops of orange provide contrast and personality. The Black Ember interior material palette ensures the car can withstand off-road conditions.

With a compact monocoque architecture, Crater Concept offers steep approach and departure angles that support serious off-road exploration. This design allows for versatility in various terrains and climates. As we reported earlier, Hyundai has been investing heavily in electric vehicle technology through collaborations with Autel Energy and other partners, making the Crater Concept an intriguing blend of ruggedness and future-forward thinking.

The concept car will be on display at AutoMobility LA 2025 until November 30, offering visitors a chance to experience its unique design and functionality firsthand. Hyundai’s vision for adventure-ready vehicles is evident in every aspect of the Crater Concept, from its exterior ruggedness to its interior flexibility and connectivity features.
