Audi has quietly become one of Mercedes-Benz and BMW’s toughest competitors, thanks to its strategic move in the early 1990s. This is the story of how Audi established itself as a premium brand without much fanfare.
For decades, breaking into the luxury car segment dominated by companies like Mercedes-Benz and BMW was a daunting task. Only a few brands have managed to succeed, with Lexus and Audi being notable exceptions in the early 1990s. The cornerstone of this achievement for both was the introduction of V8-powered sedans that represented their brand’s pinnacle.
In Audi’s case, it was the Audi V8 that served as a catalyst for its transformation from a young and relatively unknown marque to a respected luxury car manufacturer. Initially, with the launch of the first modern-era Audi in 1965 – the Audi 60 – the brand had struggled to make an impact.
The development of this early model can be traced back to Mercedes-Benz’s Auto Union era. In 1962, engineers Ludwig Kraus and others worked on concepts that later became the W118 and W119 models for Mercedes-Benz. However, these projects were eventually shelved when Mercedes sold Auto Union to Volkswagen in 1964.
Under Volkswagen’s direction, Kraus continued his work which culminated in the introduction of the Audi 60 in 1965. This car carried some design elements reminiscent of its Mercedes origins but failed to impress the public at the time. The early years were tough for Audi as it lacked a strong brand image.
It wasn’t until Ferdinand Piëch took over leadership roles within the company that Audi began to gain recognition. Starting in the mid-1970s, under Piëch’s guidance, Audi made significant strides by competing successfully in rally races with innovative technology such as quattro all-wheel drive.
The success of these racing ventures bolstered commercial support for Audi’s high-tech models equipped with advanced drivetrains. This shift helped to establish Audi as a technological leader and contributed to its image transformation towards becoming a luxury brand on par with Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
Thus, the introduction of the V8 sedan in the early 1990s marked a significant milestone for Audi’s journey into the premium segment. Today, Audi stands proudly alongside established luxury brands thanks to strategic planning and relentless innovation over decades.
