BYD Launches Atto 2 DM-i Hybrid SUV in Europe, Skips Chinese Market

Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled its latest offering, the Atto 2 DM-i hybrid SUV, in Barcelona, Spain. The vehicle is rebranded from its original name, Yuan Up DM-i, as it enters the European market. This marks a strategic shift for BYD, as this model is not available in China.

The Atto 2 DM-i, equipped with BYD’s proprietary DM-i super hybrid technology, offers an impressive range of up to 90 kilometers on battery alone and extends to approximately 1,000 kilometers when both the electric and fuel systems are utilized. In contrast, its BEV sibling, the Yuan Up (referred to as Atto 2 Comfort in Europe), boasts a WLTP range of 430 kilometers.

BYD’s move reflects the company’s commitment to adapting its product lineup according to regional preferences. The launch coincides with increased consumer demand for hybrid options in certain European markets, as highlighted by Stella Li, BYD’s executive vice president. This decision comes after extensive feedback and market analysis since the initial introduction of a BEV model earlier this year.

BYD is making significant strides in Europe, already present in 33 countries with plans to extend its dealership network to over 1,000 locations by the end of 2025. The company reported a staggering 400% growth in registrations during September, underscoring the growing popularity of BYD’s vehicles among European consumers.

In summary, BYD’s introduction of the Atto 2 DM-i is seen as a strategic move to tap into the diverse needs of European car buyers while maintaining its strong presence with battery-electric models. The launch not only enriches BYD’s product portfolio but also sets the stage for further market expansion.
