The metro Detroit area is set to receive a significant boost in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, with more than 40 new ChargePoint fast-charging ports scheduled to be installed across multiple sites owned by the Dabaja Brothers Development Group. The first ultra-fast charging station has already opened in Canton, Michigan, marking the beginning of a series of installations planned for Dearborn and Livonia.
Yousef Dabaja, owner/operator at Dabaja Brothers, explained that the initiative was driven by an observed gap in EV charging options within Canton. “We saw a lack of charging stations across metro Detroit, especially in Canton,” said Dabaja. This sentiment echoes the growing demand for reliable and accessible EV infrastructure as more consumers opt for electric vehicles.
Each new site will feature ChargePoint Express Plus fast-charging stations capable of delivering up to 500 kW to a single port and can simultaneously charge two vehicles at maximum efficiency. These stations are designed with proprietary cooling systems that maintain peak charging speeds over extended periods, ensuring consistent performance—a critical factor for drivers who rely on quick recharges during long trips.
ChargePoint’s new platform enables operators to monitor the performance of these stations in real-time and adjust pricing dynamically based on demand and usage patterns. This level of control is reminiscent of how fleet managers once monitored fuel consumption and maintenance schedules, but with a modern twist that leverages advanced analytics and AI technologies.
The introduction of these ultra-fast charging ports represents a significant advancement over previous models such as the 150 kW DC fast chargers seen in earlier EV deployments. The Express Plus stations offer not only higher power output but also enhanced reliability through their cooling systems, addressing one of the key challenges faced by early adopters of electric vehicles.
With this expansion, ChargePoint aims to fill what it calls ‘fast charging deserts’ across Detroit, providing drivers with more convenient and reliable options for recharging. Rick Wilmer, CEO at ChargePoint, emphasized that these new installations will allow EV owners to recharge their vehicles quickly when needed most, thereby reducing range anxiety and enhancing the overall driving experience.
