Mercedes-AMG GLC EV: A Powerhouse in the Making

Imagine an electric crossover with over 900 horsepower – that’s exactly what Mercedes-Benz has in store for us. The upcoming AMG GLC, a variant of the already electrified standard model, promises to be a force to reckon with. As we reported earlier this year, Mercedes-AMG isn’t content with just pushing out mildly tuned electric vehicles; they’re aiming for something far more ambitious.

The AMG GLC is set to feature a tri-motor setup, which includes one motor at the front and two at the rear. This configuration will enable it to produce an astonishing 900 horsepower, nearly double that of its nearest competitor, the Porsche Macan Turbo EV. The sheer power output suggests that this vehicle could rocket from 0-60 mph in under three seconds, making it one of the quickest cars in its class.

Underpinning all this performance is a cutting-edge battery technology featuring cylindrical cells known for their high power density and thermal characteristics. This innovative setup allows for direct cooling around each cell, ensuring optimal operating temperatures. The 800-Volt battery pack also supports fast charging at an impressive rate of 400 kW, giving drivers peace of mind on long journeys.

While the standard GLC models are expected to arrive in showrooms late next year and early the following year respectively, it’s still a while before we see the AMG variant. According to industry insiders, we might not get our hands on this beast until sometime between 2027 or early 2028. The wait will be worth it, though, given the sheer amount of power and technology packed into one vehicle.

The inclusion of simulated gearshifts is another intriguing feature of the AMG GLC. This might seem unnecessary from a practical standpoint, but for enthusiasts who enjoy the visceral experience of driving high-performance vehicles, this touch adds to the overall appeal. It’s a bit like adding flavor to an already rich dessert.

Mercedes-AMG continues to push boundaries and challenge expectations with their electric offerings. From our previous analysis on the MG 4 and its impending arrival in the UK market delayed as current models undergo significant refreshes, it’s clear that automakers are aggressively entering the electric vehicle space. As we reported earlier this year, these manufacturers are not only competing within their segments but also aiming to outperform each other with cutting-edge technology.
