Origin Energy has issued a stark warning that the government’s $2.3 billion rebate fund for home solar batteries could be depleted within a year due to soaring demand. Since the Cheaper Home Batteries Program launched in July, Australian households have invested in an impressive 136,000 batteries, with daily installations reaching up to 1800 units recently.
The popularity of these systems has skyrocketed, leading to a more than doubling of inquiries at Origin Energy. This surge is attributed to the program’s offer of a 30 percent discount on small-scale household batteries integrated with rooftop solar systems. The rebate scheme was announced in April and has already inspired a 400 percent increase in battery inquiries before its launch.
Origin Energy’s electrification general manager, Chris Zondanos, noted that the current rate of installations could exhaust the allocated funds by July 2026. He emphasized that affordability between the rebate and pricing points has significantly altered the market dynamics, making solar batteries more accessible to a broader range of consumers.
The influx of home battery systems is already having an impact on electricity demand patterns in Australia. With panels installed on over four million houses, these devices are helping to flatten peak usage times by enabling households to consume power during periods when rooftop solar generation peaks. This shift has the potential to alleviate strain on the national grid and stabilize energy prices.
Extending the rebate scheme could further enhance its benefits for both consumers and the electricity network. By encouraging more installations, Origin Energy expects that virtual power plants will become increasingly attractive as they offer additional value through selling stored energy back into the grid during peak times.
