The ID. Era will be VW’s first EREV SUV developed in collaboration with SAIC. Initially showcased as a large family-oriented vehicle at the Shanghai Auto Show 2025, it features three rows of seats (six or seven seat options) and an impressive range exceeding 1,000 kilometers. Additionally, it includes advanced L2 driver assistance technology.

Visually, the ID. Era carries distinctive two-tier headlights and incorporates design elements such as wide wheel arches, multi-spoke wheels, roof rails, and a LiDAR sensor for autonomous driving capabilities. While full interior details are yet to be disclosed, the vehicle is expected to feature a large screen and ergonomic comfort features like soft pillows on headrests.

The powertrain specifications remain undisclosed, but it’s anticipated that the ID. Era will utilize SAIC’s IM Motor EREV platform, similar to the IM LS6 fastback crossover with an 800V system and a 66 kWh battery pack providing up to 450 km of range. This setup is expected to enter volume production in April 2026.

Despite the promising design and features, Volkswagen may be entering a market where sales of EREVs have been declining for five consecutive months due to consumer preference towards pure electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV). The ID. Era will compete directly with models like the Li L9 and Aito M9 in its segment.
