Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-tech has started supplying unified cells to Volkswagen, with deliveries commencing on November 20, 2025. This marks the beginning of a five-year strategic partnership between Gotion and Volkswagen’s in-house battery unit PowerCo.

The unified cell technology from Gotion is designed as a standardized solution that can accommodate various chemical systems and fit multiple vehicle platforms, offering high compatibility and performance. According to Gotion, these cells incorporate advanced features such as fast-charging capabilities, enhanced safety measures, and improved low-temperature performance. The company stated that the delivered cells achieve superior levels in terms of energy density, safety performance, and cost control.

During a delivery ceremony held on November 20 at Gotion’s headquarters in Hefei, Anhui province, Volkswagen CTO Thomas Schmall and PowerCo CEO Frank Blome were present alongside Gotion chairman Li Zhen. The event also saw the unveiling of a battery pack system developed by Gotion based on its unified cells.

As part of this partnership, Gotion will provide high-performance lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries to Volkswagen from 2026 through 2032, supporting various platforms for the German automaker. The project in Hefei’s Xinzhan district has an annual production capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours.

Gotion ranks among the world’s leading battery manufacturers, with a market share of 3.7% and global installations totaling 29.7 GWh as of September 2025, according to South Korean market research firm SNE Research.
