The Cupra Leon VZ and VZ TCR are the latest additions to the Leon lineup, celebrating its success in global TCR touring car racing. Both models boast significant power upgrades over recent years, with a peak of 321bhp and 310lb ft of torque from Volkswagen’s EA888 engine. The VZ model has a production run of 1500 units globally, while the more exclusive VZ TCR is limited to just 499 cars worldwide.

Despite their high performance credentials, the VZ and VZ TCR models are not the most powerful Leons ever produced. The 2.0 TSI Leon 4Drive Estate still leads with a potent 329bhp output. Nonetheless, both new editions surpass their predecessor, the series-production Leon 300 hatch, in terms of power and torque.

The VZ models come equipped with adaptively damped sport suspension and a VAQ torque-vectoring pseudo-differential for enhanced performance. The standard fitment of six-pot Akebono front brakes is another significant upgrade over lesser Leons. These features make the new editions more than just race-inspired showpieces, offering genuine track-day capabilities.

While both models share many technical upgrades, they differ in their approach to styling and practicality. The VZ model aims for a balance between performance and everyday usability with subtle exterior modifications such as copper-colored quad exhaust pipes. In contrast, the VZ TCR opts for a more aggressive look, featuring wider 19-inch wheels, grippier tires, an aerodynamic kit, and race-inspired decals.

The removal of the Leon’s standard 155mph speed limiter in both new editions allows them to theoretically reach a top speed of 168mph. This is a significant upgrade for enthusiasts looking for high-speed thrills on less crowded roads. The VZ model, however, remains more accessible with its lower price point and higher production numbers compared to the limited-edition TCR variant.

For automotive enthusiasts and Cupra loyalists, these new models represent an exciting chapter in the Leon’s legacy. Drawing inspiration from racing success while offering practical upgrades for daily driving, the VZ and VZ TCR continue the brand’s tradition of blending performance with usability. As we look back at previous iterations like the original 300 model, it’s clear that Cupra is pushing boundaries without losing sight of what makes the Leon a beloved hot hatch.
