According to iSelect’s analysis, Sydney has eight of Australia’s top ten most expensive toll roads, with the WestConnex M4 leading in revenue generation and price hikes. The WestConnex M4 is projected to earn $1.88 billion in 2025, marking a significant increase from previous years.

The survey also highlighted Brisbane’s Go Between Bridge as the most expensive per kilometre at an astounding $13.50/km for its short distance of just 300 metres. This contrasts sharply with longer toll roads like Sydney’s Eastern Distributor ($1.69/km) and NorthConnex ($1.13/km), which offer better value despite their higher overall costs.

Comparatively, Melbourne’s CityLink charges up to $12.25 per trip for its 22km route, making it the most expensive toll road in Australia based on total cost. However, when considering expense per kilometre, Brisbane’s Go Between Bridge takes the lead at an exorbitant rate.

The study found that Sydney’s WestConnex M4 has seen the fastest year-on-year toll increase, rising faster than inflation. This trend is mirrored across several other toll roads in Australia, indicating a growing financial burden on drivers despite varying lengths and locations of these toll roads.

These findings underscore a growing trend of increasing toll costs across major cities in Australia, with significant variations in pricing and value based on distance and location.
