Truck drivers, who traverse the nation’s highways daily, have shared their insights on which roads are most challenging versus those that offer smoother sailing. According to recent surveys conducted by Overdrive Highway Report Card and Trucker Path, specific routes in Indiana and Arizona/New Mexico stand out as particularly problematic.

Key Takeaways

Interstate 70 in Indiana is rated the worst highway due to poor pavement conditions and maintenance issues.

Interstate 40 in Arizona and New Mexico ranks poorly, with truckers citing similar concerns about road quality.

The best highways are determined by factors like parking availability, fuel prices, and overall route efficiency.

Trucker Path’s survey highlights Interstate 70 in Indiana as the worst highway. Truck drivers report frequent accidents and dangerous driving conditions due to poor pavement maintenance. Overdrive Highway Report Card data reveals that between May and September 2019 alone, 156 crashes occurred on this stretch of road.

Interstate 40 through Arizona and New Mexico also ranks poorly among truckers. Similar to Interstate 70 in Indiana, concerns about the condition of the roads dominate feedback from drivers. Lack of maintenance exacerbates issues such as potholes and uneven surfaces, leading to higher risks for accidents and wear on vehicles.

Despite these challenges, some highways are recognized for their efficiency and support services. Trucker Path evaluates routes based on criteria like parking availability, fuel prices, and overall route quality. High-scoring roads often feature well-maintained facilities that cater specifically to the needs of commercial drivers.

The disparity between poorly rated and highly-rated highways underscores the importance of infrastructure investment in key transportation corridors. States with high traffic volumes must prioritize road maintenance to improve safety and reduce operational costs for trucking companies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What factors contribute to poor ratings on highways like Interstate 70 in Indiana?

Poor pavement conditions, lack of maintenance, and high accident rates are the primary reasons for low ratings. These issues lead to increased risks for truck drivers and higher operational costs.

How does Trucker Path determine which highways rank as the best?

Trucker Path uses a point system based on factors such as parking availability, fuel prices, and overall route quality. The evaluation considers millions of inputs from truck drivers to provide an accurate reflection of road conditions.

The insights provided by these surveys offer valuable data for policymakers and transportation officials aiming to improve the nation’s highway infrastructure. By addressing common issues highlighted by truckers, states can enhance safety and efficiency on major routes.

Diesel prices have dropped slightly this week after several weeks of rising costs, offering some relief to trucking fleets.

After several weeks of climbing costs, diesel prices in the United States finally took a small breath this week. The national average price dropped by 3.7 cents to $3.83 per gallon as of November 24, offering some relief for trucking fleets that have been feeling the pinch.

Key Takeaways

The national average diesel price fell from $3.87 to $3.83 per gallon this week.

Diesel prices remain higher than last year, at 2.9 cents more per gallon.

Regional pricing varies widely, with the Gulf Coast being the cheapest and California the most expensive.

This slight dip in diesel costs is welcome news for trucking fleets that have been grappling with rising expenses throughout 2025. However, it’s important to remember that this reduction follows a period of increasing prices, which started the year at $3.56 per gallon and has since fluctuated but generally trended upwards.

The regional breakdown reveals stark differences in diesel costs across America. The Gulf Coast region offers the lowest price at $3.46 per gallon, while California drivers are paying a hefty $4.98 per gallon. These variations stem from factors such as local refinery access and state-specific taxes and regulations.

Understanding what drives these prices is crucial for fleet managers trying to navigate this volatile market. According to the Department of Energy, crude oil costs make up the largest component of diesel pricing, followed by refining expenses, distribution and marketing fees, and federal and state fuel taxes. Each factor can cause significant fluctuations in price.

Despite this week’s dip, analysts caution that winter could bring more volatility to diesel prices. Cold weather, refinery maintenance schedules, and global events could all contribute to sudden spikes in cost. For now, the slight reduction offers a brief respite for fleets, but they must remain vigilant as 2025 nears its end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are diesel prices higher in California?

Diesel prices in California tend to be the highest due to strict environmental regulations, high state taxes, and limited access to refineries compared to other regions.

What factors could cause diesel prices to rise again?

Cold weather affecting refinery operations, maintenance schedules, and global events such as conflicts or supply chain disruptions can all lead to an increase in diesel prices.

In the face of these challenges, trucking fleets are holding their breath for any further drops in price while staying prepared for potential spikes. The coming winter months promise both opportunities and risks, keeping everyone on edge but hopeful for smoother sailing ahead.

Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA) and its sibling company Mack Trucks are set to revolutionize the trucking industry by allowing drivers to perform software updates over-the-air (OTA) from their cabs. This move is a significant step towards reducing downtime and increasing operational efficiency.

Starting in late 2020, fleet managers will be able to approve changes, which can then be instantly activated by the driver via a simple screen icon on the truck’s instrument panel for an array of functions including engine performance tweaks, transmission adjustments, and diesel post-treatment improvements.

Conal Deedy, VTNA’s director of commercial telematics solutions, emphasizes that staying current with software updates not only reduces failure codes but also enhances fuel efficiency, lowers environmental impact, and slashes operational costs. Drivers can now configure parameters like maximum road speed or switch the engine to an eco-friendly mode from their cab’s on/off position.

David Pardue, vice president of connected vehicles and contractual services at Mack Trucks, highlights that most updates take less than 15 minutes to complete once initiated by the driver. The company’s OTA service, called Mack Over The Air, uses its integrated telematics system GuardDog Connect for remote reprogramming.

Mack is already selling packages of up to 50 in-cab software updates per year for trucks manufactured since 2018. Before this offering, customers were limited to just two parameter adjustments annually as part of their uptime subscription plan. This shift marks a significant improvement in flexibility and convenience for fleet operators.

Competitors like Daimler Trucks North America have been providing similar OTA services through their Detroit Connect platform since 2018, enabling fleets to remotely control cruise speeds and idle shutdowns based on environmental conditions along with other critical parameters. But the ability of drivers themselves to push these updates represents a step forward in user empowerment.
