The Mazda MX-5 Miata is a classic example of how fun and excitement in a car don’t always come from raw horsepower. The latest generation, known as ND (fourth-generation), brought back all the charm of the original Miata but with modern improvements.
As used ND Miatas become more affordable on the market, it’s a great time to consider buying one. However, these cars do come with their own set of quirks and issues that potential buyers need to be aware of before making a purchase. The first step is understanding the differences between the ND1 (2016-2018) and ND2 (2019-2023) models.
The ND1 model came with a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated Skyactiv G engine that produced 155 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque, with a redline at 6,800 RPM. The ND2 version, however, had some significant upgrades: the redline was raised to 7,500 RPM, and the engine featured lighter pistons and connecting rods, a stronger crankshaft, a bigger throttle body, and larger valves, which bumped up the output to 181 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. This makes the ND2 model more powerful and responsive.
While both models are generally reliable with engines that can easily exceed 200,000 miles, there are some common issues to watch out for when buying a used Miata. For instance, high-mileage ND1 cars often suffer from oil consumption due to piston wear, which requires regular monitoring but isn’t too worrisome in terms of repair costs.
Another issue with the ND1 is potential valve spring failure, leading Mazda to recall these vehicles for service. It’s crucial to ensure that any used Miata you’re considering has undergone this necessary maintenance. Additionally, transmission problems are common in the ND1 model, particularly worn-out synchros in second and third gears, which can cause grinding noises during a test drive.
The good news is that many of these issues were addressed with the introduction of the ND2 model, making it slightly more reliable overall. However, finding an affordable used ND3 (the newest generation) is still challenging due to its rarity and high price point.
