When it comes to rallying, perseverance is key. Gravelwerx Racing’s Matthew Nykanen and his co-driver Lars Anderson proved this at the American Rally Association season closer in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Despite driving a battered BMW E36 with only three wheels, they managed an impressive podium finish. The duo started off strong during their run through rocky terrain but faced unexpected challenges.
In the heat of competition, Nykanen and Anderson encountered a significant obstacle when one of their wheels got stuck on a large rock in Special Stage 13. This led to the left rear suspension breaking two miles into the stage. “We still had about three miles to go with the rear driver’s corner of the car dragging on the ground,” recalled Nykanen.
Despite the damage, they didn’t give up and continued their journey cautiously, managing tire smoke and maintaining visibility by keeping the doors open during transit runs. The team’s dedication paid off as they finished first in class with a substantial lead. Nykanen’s calm under pressure allowed him to secure a victory despite the car’s compromised condition.
As we reported earlier, rally drivers often face numerous challenges that test not just their driving skills but also their resilience and strategic thinking. Matthew Nykanen exemplified these qualities by pushing through difficult conditions with a severely damaged vehicle. His story is reminiscent of other racers who have faced similar hurdles, such as BMW drivers who endure extreme weather conditions.
Nykanen’s achievement highlights the importance of maintaining a safe pace and careful planning in rallying. His success also underscores the need for teams to anticipate potential issues, as seen with car makers who are increasingly aware of supply chain risks.
