Nano One Secures Major Grant to Boost LFP Battery Capacity

Nano One Materials, a Canadian company with expertise in lithium-ion battery cathode active materials (CAM), has received significant funding from the Canadian government. The C$5 million grant, provided by Natural Resources Canada’s Energy Innovation Program, will support Nano One’s expansion of their LFP CAM production at facilities in Candiac and Burnaby.

With this investment, Nano One plans to increase its production capacity from 200 tonnes per year to a minimum of 800 tonnes annually. The company is aiming to meet growing demand for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries used across various industries, including electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

Alex Holmes, Chief Operating Officer at Nano One, highlighted the importance of this funding in accelerating their commercialization efforts. “This grant not only aids our immediate production goals but also strengthens our commitment to developing clean technology manufacturing capabilities,” said Holmes. The expansion will be executed with technical support from Japan’s Sumitomo Metal Mining.

The Candiac facility, which acts as a demonstration plant, is pivotal in offering training services for licensees and driving continuous process improvements and product enhancements. This initiative aligns closely with Canada’s strategic goals to foster innovation and economic growth within the clean technology sector.

Furthermore, Nano One’s expansion benefits from additional funding sources such as the US Department of Defense, Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (NGen), Investissement Québec, and Technoclimat. These partnerships underscore the collaborative approach required in advancing battery technology and establishing a robust supply chain for electric vehicles and other energy-intensive applications.

As Dan Blondal, CEO of Nano One, noted, “This investment solidifies our path to commercialization and reinforces Canada’s role as a leader in clean-technology manufacturing.” With increasing global interest in LFP batteries due to their cost-effectiveness and reliability, Nano One’s expansion is poised to play a crucial role in the evolving landscape of battery production.
