IM Motors Unveils LS6 SUV in New Zealand

SAIC Motor’s electric vehicle subsidiary, IM Motors, has made its mark on the premium EV market by launching the LS6 SUV as the IM6 in New Zealand. Starting deliveries in December, this right-hand-drive model is priced from NZ$66,900 (approximately $37,490 USD), setting a competitive base for what could become a significant player in the region’s electric vehicle arena.

The IM6 comes in three distinct variants: Premium, Platinum, and Performance AWD. The Premium variant features a single rear motor with 217 kW peak power and a torque of 450 Nm, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds. In contrast, the Platinum version sports an even more powerful motor delivering 300 kW peak power and 500 Nm peak torque, reducing its 0-100 km/h sprint time to a brisk 5.4 seconds.

The top-of-the-line Performance AWD variant introduces dual electric motors for enhanced performance, boasting combined peak power of an impressive 572 kW with peak torque reaching up to 800 Nm. This model can accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in a lightning-fast 3.4 seconds. Additionally, IM Motors offers two battery pack options: 75 kWh and 100 kWh, providing WLTP ranges of 450 km, 555 km, and 505 km respectively.

Originally launched in China last year, the LS6 has undergone several updates, including the recent addition of extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants. This marks a significant step for IM Motors as it strives to capture market share beyond its home turf in Asia. With the introduction of EREV models featuring larger batteries supplied by CATL, the company aims to cater to customers seeking longer driving ranges without sacrificing performance.

The new LS6 is also notable for being the first model to showcase IM Motors’ Hengxing EREV system. As competition heats up in the premium EV segment across Oceania, this move positions IM Motors to challenge established brands such as Tesla and BMW. The arrival of the updated LS6 in New Zealand signals a growing trend among Chinese automakers aiming to establish themselves in international markets.

As we reported earlier, Foxconn has also ventured into the EV market, launching its Model A electric vehicle at Taipei Tech Day. This strategic move by IM Motors to introduce the LS6 in New Zealand alongside other international launches reflects a broader shift towards global expansion for Chinese automakers.
